When you have a new family or just got a promotion at work, it can be difficult to balance your time equally. While your job may require you to spend a lot of time at work, especially if you are working on a new project, it is important to give your family an equal amount of time. This does not mean you can be at home but still working on your laptop or mobile phone, however. It is important to be present, both in body and mind. Creating this balance does not always come naturally, and requires discipline and organization. Luckily, with a few tips, you should be able to find a successful balance in no time.

Define Your Time

In order to maintain a successful and healthy balance, you need to have excellent time management skills. Having strong time management skills not only increases productivity and efficiency, it also increases effectiveness. In order to develop your time management skills, you need to create an environment conducive to effectiveness. This includes setting priorities and carrying out activities around these priorities. For example, if your child has a soccer game that night, that needs to be a priority. Everything else you have to do that day needs to be set around that priority. If you know you have a big project coming up at work, try to prepare as much as you can so you don’t have to spend as much time working on it. If you know you have to put in some late nights, however, try to take a few vacation days the following week to make it up to your family. This will help maintain a healthy balance.


One of the most important things you can do to help balance work time and family time is disconnect when you get home. There are many different ways you can do this. For starters, try moving your computer and other technology into a dedicated office. If you need to do some work or check something, you can go into the office and not distract the other members of your family. The biggest thing you can do, however, is disconnect from your mobile phone. Some people like (or need) to keep their phone on them at all times in case somebody calls. This is important if you have a partner who works or you need to arrange a pick-up for your children. This does not mean you should be checking work emails or texts, however. If you think you will be distracted, keep your phone in your office, and check it once or twice a night. You should also make your bedroom a “no electronics zone”. Blue light has been shown to cause poor sleeping habits, and getting enough sleep is essential to being able to balance your time efficiently.

Be In The Moment

The most important thing you can do to balance your work life and family life is to always “be in the moment”. This means when you are at home or out with your family, you need to be fully committed to that time. No checking your phone or emails or anything like that. When you are at work, you need to be working. While it is okay to take short mental breaks and check various websites, if you manage your time efficiently at work, you won’t have as much (if anything) to do at home.
